You Get an “A”

My Favorite Past Time

A couple of weekends ago we kicked off the CBVA season by traveling up north for an A tournament. Normally, my partner is Ali Justin, however, I didn’t play with Ali this time. Instead, because neither of us had talked about playing, Karey Gregerson asked me if I’d join her. She was going up anyway and REALLY wanted to play instead of just being a spectator. I checked with Ali to see if she’d be cool with that, and on her glowing approval, I registered Karey and myself online.

We both headed into the tourney with no rating and just hoped to do well. We were okay with losing if it had to happen. Hell, we’d only played together for a couple of pick-up games so we had no idea how well we’d do as a team. We ended up taking 3rd place along with another one of the San Diego teams who traveled up with us (I guess we tie because we never actually got to play each other). All-in-all it was a solid performance and each of the two games we lost (to the 1st and 2nd place teams) were very close. It was a great time and because we made it to 3rd place in a 15-team tourney… we earned our A rating as well. God damn, I love me some volleyball!

My Return

Snazzy New Brace

So my return to volleyball is staged this morning. Wish me luck. I’ve been messing around on the net at my work and even there it feels a little tweaky but I’m SICK of not playing so I bought a brace and I’m headin’ out.

Update 10/25/08:
I’ve played two weekends in a row now and it’s feeling good. I’m not 100% sure the brace I’m using is helping and I seem to be favoring every other muscle in my right foot so that I don’t have to use the ankle (that’s very painful in case you were wondering). All-in-all it seems that eventually I’ll be back to my old hopping self in no time. I’ve also been doing a lot of calf raises during my workout and it seems to be helping.

In case anyone cares … lol.

Ankle Injury

RICE

For those who don’t know, I sprained my ankle during my volleyball league on Thursday 8/28/08 (coincidentally my sister’s 30th birthday). I was blocking and the hitter decided to come under the net. I landed on his foot and rolled my right ankle. I was laid out all Labor Day weekend with my butt on the couch and my foot in the air.

I’m happy to report that my ankle feels much better today (almost a full week later). Still have some residual pain when the blood rushes back to the area and almost no range of motion but at least when I put my weight on it, it’s not squealing in agony.

One thing I have noticed about the human race during this period … we’re a bunch of jerks! I’ve never seen so many rude looks, unhelpful attitudes, and just general demeanor of “I don’t give a shit about you” in all my life. I now strive to go out of my way to help those struggling to get around. I feel your pain and I am truly sorry if I’ve ever been discourteous.

Victory

scraps_champs

We won the social indoor volleyball championship last night!

We went into the tournament having only lost 2 games in the season but got off to rough start against a seemingly unknown team. A closer look revealed that we had played them before but they decided to recruit better players for the tournament. I hate when people do that. Isn’t the point of the whole thing to play through the season and then get good enough to win in the tournament without any outside help? Anyway, we still won the game and moved forward.

The rest of the matches were a breeze. We quickly beat out every team until the championship match. The rules changed, quick game to 21 instead of 15 this time, and we were going against the team with 2 of the best hitters in the league. We pulled ahead to a quick lead but we lost it when one of their monster hitters moved to the front row and the other was serving. It was touch and go there for a while but with a fairly close game right til the end…WE WON.

We were awarded a little VAVI bobble head and this wonderful picture. Congratulations Scraps….we did it!!
